A Great Resume Doesn't Always Make a Great Retail Leader

Discover why experience alone doesn't define great retail leadership and what businesses should really look for when hiring their next executive.

A polished resume can get someone into the interview room. But it won't tell you how they'll lead when things don't go according to plan.

And in retail, things rarely go exactly according to plan.

I've always believed that hiring the right leader requires looking beyond impressive job titles, years of experience, and a long list of accomplishments.

Because the real question isn't simply what someone has done.

It's what they're capable of building next.

Experience Matters. But Execution Matters More.

Retail is an industry where leadership is tested every single day.

From operational challenges and workforce management to customer expectations and profitability, successful leaders must continuously balance competing priorities.

Someone may have spent 20 years in retail and held multiple senior positions. That's valuable experience.

But can they make difficult decisions? Can they develop their teams? Can they recognize problems before those problems become expensive?

Most importantly, can they turn strategic conversations into measurable business outcomes?

That's where the difference becomes clear.

The Leadership Qualities I Look For

When evaluating leadership talent, I believe there are four qualities that deserve particular attention.

1. Accountability Without Excuses

Great leaders take ownership of outcomes. They don't spend their time explaining why something couldn't be accomplished. They identify what needs to change and get moving.

2. The Ability to Build Strong Teams

A successful retail operation isn't built around one individual. Strong leaders recognize talent, develop future leaders, and establish a culture where people want to perform.

3. Operational Understanding

Strategy is important, but understanding what happens at the store level is equally critical. Leaders need to understand the realities of the business, not just what appears in a presentation.

4. Adaptability

Consumer behavior changes. Markets shift. Technology evolves. The strongest leaders recognize when yesterday's successful approach needs to become tomorrow's improved strategy.

Hiring for Today Is Easy. Hiring for Tomorrow Takes Vision.

One of the biggest mistakes businesses can make is hiring exclusively to solve an immediate problem.

A position opens. The workload increases. Everyone wants the vacancy filled as quickly as possible.

But here's something worth considering:

Will this individual simply maintain what's already there, or will they help move the organization forward?

The right leadership hire should bring more than stability.

They should bring perspective, direction, and the ability to create opportunities that didn't previously exist.

That's why executive search should never be treated as nothing more than matching a resume against a job description.

It's about understanding the business, its challenges, its culture, and where it wants to go.

The Question Every Hiring Team Should Ask

During the hiring process, I encourage businesses to think beyond qualifications and ask themselves one important question:

"Would I trust this person to lead my business through its most difficult year?"

It's a different way of evaluating talent.

Because leadership becomes most visible when circumstances become challenging.

The right person doesn't just perform when conditions are favorable. They provide direction when uncertainty sets in.

Final Thoughts

Retail businesses don't grow simply because they hire people with impressive backgrounds.

They grow because they put the right people in positions where their experience, judgment, and leadership can make a meaningful difference.

So, the next time you're reviewing candidates for a critical leadership position, look beyond the resume.

Find the person who can build the team, strengthen the operation, and move the business forward.

Don't just hire for the position. Hire for the impact.
